Respirometry is an indispensable tool in many areas of science, and its direct human impact can be dramatic (think of the metabolic data required for understanding and treating the human obesity epidemic). The realization is dawning that molecular genetics and biochemistry, powerful as they are, offer incomplete understanding of the intact, functioning organism at our current levels of knowledge, and that metabolic measurement offers a cornucopia of whole-animal insight.
